But since this is me talking, this will be about a computer game.
It all started many years ago when Sega was still going strong with their Saturn. They released a new game which was so revolutionary that it required a whole new kind of controller to play, and they called it NIGHTS Into Dreams. Anyway, seeing as it was only ever released in Japan and the US, initially there was no way for me to play it.
The one day we got a hold of something amazing: a little black plastic cartridge to put in the bac of the machine that would allow us to play all imported games!
Oh, I played that game so much. There was something so magical about it. All you had to do was fly around and collect itemt. If you collect enough and do it fast enough, before the time runs out, you string up amazing bonuses. In some levels you could even get an infinite combo. If you were good enough.
The game was rather short but the replay valur only got better and better the more you played.
Then the little black cartridge died.
Suffice to say I was quite sad about that. But then Sega did something amazing. They released a “demo” of the game to the entire world, including europe, and by some strange twist of fate my brother came upon a magazine with this very disc on the cover.
now you might be thinking, ‘what’s so special about a demo?’ If you have read the title it will not be much of a surprise though. You see, the game was packed with special touches, most prominently a very strong christmas theme. There were presents you could open by playing the game, which contained image galleries and soundtracks and special modes and I could go on. But the most prominent feature was that, in december, all the graphics changes into snowy landscapes packed with christmas decorations!
For one december I was in gaming heaven. More games should have stuff like this. It was amazing.
Then the battery died and erased all my progress in both games. The magic faded and I went on to other things.
But the memory will always be there. And in those memories, the Dream will always stay brilliant and fresh.
